"The imaginations of Dorthe Kærgaard"
(Isabel Cristina López Hamze, Cuba)
Danish | English | Spanish
“A golden dream world – Dorthe Kærgaard's beautiful and meaningful pictures take time. It would be wise to have more than just a little time available if you want to visit the visual universe of the painter Dorthe Kærgaard.... Her pictures are not so easy to understand...(here) naked human figures, snakes, horses and other animals appear together with ancient sculptures in strange and occasionally disturbing situations... It takes time to read such a painting. Basically, you never finish it. It's like burrs, it sticks, it's hard to brush off... Dorthe Kærgaard's dream world (is) a challenge and a great experience.”
(Vibeke Skov, Randers County Gazette, 28.11.2000)
“The picture Scenario - the worst imaginable - in which she conveys in cold colours and with an almost transparent glow over the picture the fate that all the countless innocent victims always risk suffering during an armed conflict. Specifically, the picture takes its starting point from the accounts of the Russian army's first invasion of Chechnya in 1996, but in all its horror she has succeeded in conveying a mood and a basic condition in life that leaves the viewer with a feeling of striking identification with the figures' completely tangible radiance of powerlessness and deep and paralyzing anxiety - just as in most of the other pictures in the exhibition she brings out the warmth and hope in both colors and shapes.”

Myths about the human condition
Konrad Guldberg, Kunstavisen 5/97
"Dorthe Kærgaard from Northern Jutland tells of man's bewildered search in an all-too-overwhelming world under an even more overwhelming sky. A strong existential commitment in a northern fjord backdrop of sky and sea."
(Holbæk County Liberal Newspaper, 17.6.1994)
